Q&A with RedBook Agency

The RedBook Agency is a specialist consultancy that advises clients on the best team for their property projects in London or the country, including architects, interior designers, garden designers and project managers. Sandy Mitchell founded the RedBook Agency in 2011.

What gave you the idea to set up RedBook? – When restoring our family home—a small Grade II-listed manor in West Berkshire—I suddenly woke up to the fact that no one could tell me who were the ideal creative professionals to suit my budget, taste and personality.

What is your favourite country estate? – Blenheim Palace and its ‘Capability’ Brown grounds—a vision of heaven. Try as I might, I can’t think how to tempt the Duke of Marlborough to move out and get my hands on the place.

What is your favourite building in London? – Zaha Hadid’s Serpentine Sackler Gallery. It lifts my faith in human ingenuity whenever I pass by.

Historically, who is your favourite architect, interior designer and garden designer? – Architect: all those Georgian geniuses who made the town and country houses we still regard as dream homes. Interior designer: Forget history. The range of talent today in interior design is the most brilliant and exciting ever seen.

Who is your favourite garden designer? – The late-18th-century’s Humphry Repton. He produced books of his designs known as ‘red books’ after which I named my company.

Worst mistake in a building project? – Early efforts at DIY home improvement. You would think vandals with heavy tools had done their worst.

Greatest success in building project? – Employing exactly the right architect, interior designer and garden designs for homes in London and the country. And resisting the temptation to touch a sledgehammer, screwdriver or paint brush ever again.
