How Long Does Coronavirus Live On Surfaces?
There’s no evidence to suggest that Coronavirus can be passed on by touching materials, but we know that the virus can survive on plastic for up to 72 hours. There is currently much research investigating self-cleaning materials, including self-adhesive film for hand railings, furniture and handles. The virus can survive on stainless steel for up to 48 hours and on cardboard for up to 24 hours. In air, survival time is estimated to be about 3 hours.
Copper is a naturally antibacterial agent and is used in electrical wiring, roofing and plumbing among many other purposes. It’s a soft material and can be alloyed to other metals for increased hardness. Broseley also uses a lot of copper for handles and rail coverings, as this gives Coronavirus only around 4 hours to survive.
The challenge facing the industry will be to find a balance between hygiene, sustainability, and value and companies are beginning to realise that if they don’t conform in the future, then their buyers will choose what they think is not only a safer option but a more environmentally friendly choice.
